Vermouth 101

I’ve only recently started to develop an appreciation for good vermouth. I used to buy to occasional bottle of whatever was cheapest at Trader Joe’s to make a passable Manhattan. But now that I’ve started paying attention, I’m thrilled when I see Carpano Antica being poured at a bar. I buy different brands for home use in a quest to find my go to vermouth (at the moment Noilly Prat). I get excited about trying Punt e Mes.

Vermouth 101 is a fantastic website designed “to demystify vermouth, primarily for the American audience.” Not only does it include history, vocabulary, and serving advice, the website has a mixed drinks section with recipes including this gem:

Saratoga Cocktail (c. 1887)

1 oz brandy

1 oz straight rye whiskey

1 oz red vermouth

2 dashes angostura bitters

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon.
